Geo-economical Curriculum in Policies and Culture of the Territory

PhD in Economics - Section of Economic Geography

Such curriculum, in the field of the geo-economical analysis run by an integrated approach to the sustainability, is meant to offer a theoretical and practical ability in understanding and solving economic, political and social problems, which are strictly connected with the territorial dimension.

Consequently we front two topic issues of research:

  • the policies, meant and analysed in the geo-economical field as a collective action which overcomes the very particular activity carried out by the public management, and which includes the role of other actors (either economic and non economic) linked in the territorial network (local/regional, global; Amin, 1999; Salone, 2005);
  • the territory, not only as the result of a mere geo-economical analysis, in its physical and spatial dimension (e.g. theoretical, Conti, 1996; Bencardino, Prezioso, 2006); on the contrary it invests the entire local society, with its actors and their cultural values, which are substantial in the economical and political processes, like the ones for the knowledge and identity of places, environment and community (Conti, 1996; Greffe, 2002).

Such topic issues are divided in four specific themes:

  1. the sustainable development and the environmental policies;
  2. the landscape and the policies for the territorial renewal;
  3. the local systems and the globalization;
  4. the tourism and the territorial policies.

The educational activity suggested to the PhD Students is organised with lessons, seminars, practical exercitations, researches, projects and final thesis, all meant in the following structure:

  • theoretical and practical courses about geographical and economical subjects (six courses during the first year, whose two compulsory);
  • seminars run either by house and visiting foreign Professors (not less than six per years);
  • exercitations in the G.I.S. Laboratory;
  • a stage abroad at Research Centres or at Universities (not less than six months);
  • a personal project of the PhD Student according to the aforesaid themes;
  • the final thesis divided in two parts: the first of theoretical framing, the second of field mission.

The Geo-economical Curriculum in Policies and Culture of the Territory is meant to offer knowledge and innovative competence for the sustainability and for the enhancing of the economical, social and cultural development of the territory. Its goal is to promote abilities meant to effort the environmental and economical component in a multi-disciplinary way, either in the public and in the private sector, and to continue in the research sector.

The educational activities aim to supply:

  • abilities to integrate the social, economical and environmental dimensions of the sustainable development and to act the necessaries actions for the cohesion of the territorial policies;
  • competences to determine processes of governance able to link public and private local actors in order to contribute to the development of the territory;
  • techniques and methods to prepare projects for the local development in the Developed Countries, in the Developing Countries and in the Under Developed Countries;
  • the knowledge of the concepts and the principles of action for the territorial policies in the international organisations outline.
